One-on-One Support the Key for this Student's Success |
Erik Navarette has always struggled in school. He attended many high schools in San Diego and was never able to build a solid academic foundation. In the tenth grade, a visit to the principal’s office because of low school performance opened the door to the idea of Job Corps. Erik followed that advice and was very surprised of all that Job Corps had to offer. He was eager to start a new beginning and obtain his high school diploma. Erik began at Job Corps/SIATech May, 2006, energized because he saw the great opportunities that he would be able to achieve.
“This program is a good place for youth that know how to take advantage of life and its opportunities. I have utilized all of the resources here on center and proud of what I have accomplished here at SIATech/ Job Corps...”
Erik began the high school program with the idea that this would be the last school that he would attend and that he would “give his all to the program” to ensure his success. Overall he knew that he would have the support he needed at SIATech because of all the staff and self-paced curriculum. It became easier for Erik to learn because of the one-on-one academic support and classroom environment. Erik became very outgoing and applied for a student leader position for the Student Government Association and has upheld the C.O.R.E. values around center. He also has received perfect scores on his evaluations. He has completed all but two of the high school courses and has completed the Cement Mason apprentice program. The most important thing Erik will leave with is to “never give up on the things you want in life.” |
