Wisconsin District Cuts Absenteeism With Recording Studios

Sun Prairie Area School District in Wisconsin says on-campus recording studios have become a surprising fix for chronic absenteeism. A district survey found 34% of students said the studios significantly affect whether they show up to school, with 17% saying they’d attend “much less” without the program and another 17% saying they wouldn’t come at all.

The initiative, built with school-transformation nonprofit 4 Learning and the platform Soundtrap, has students writing and recording raps, songs, and podcasts on academic content — from math formulas to food safety — as part of coursework across subjects. What started in three high schools has since expanded to more than 15 schools districtwide.

“Your voice is always gonna be more important than any AI tool is going to be,” said Karen Walters, a library media specialist at West High School.
